Vitamin treatment options
Factual information to read before your consultation. Only a face-to-face assessment can tell you which options, if any, are suitable for you.
Diet and oral supplements
For many people, changes to diet or an oral supplement are the first option to consider. Your GP or pharmacist can also advise.
Vitamin B12 injections (prescription-only medicine)
Injectable vitamin B12 is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. It is used when there is a clinical reason, such as a confirmed deficiency, and can only be prescribed after an assessment by a qualified prescriber.
Side effects can include pain, redness or swelling at the injection site and, rarely, an allergic reaction. It is not suitable for anyone with a known allergy to the medicine or its ingredients.
Vitamin D injections (prescription-only medicine)
Injectable vitamin D is also a prescription-only medicine. It is not usually the first option, and too much vitamin D can raise calcium levels in the blood, which is one reason assessment and, where needed, blood tests matter.
Every option is discussed at a face-to-face consultation, alongside your medical history, before any decision is made.
